Various Uses of Expansion Joints

Why Expansion Joints?
Expansion joint systems are used to reduce noise, vibration, resisting shock, relieving pipe and anchor stresses, compensating for misalignment and providing access to piping and equipment.

Applications of Expansion (Movement) Joints:
Fabric expansion joints bellows are manufactured out of several different materials. In some cases, fabric expansion joints are also constructed out of rubberized materials. Some of them are used in systems where gas seals need to be provided include Fluoroa Elastomer and Fluro plastic. Fabric expansion joints are the workhorse of many industrial plants, connecting exhaust system components to their adjacent duct work. They are most commonly found connecting transport piping and exhaust ducts.

Fabric pipe expansion joints are often used in ducts which carry hot gases at low pressures. The major design parameters are the temperatures and flow rates of the gases and the amount and abrasiveness of solids suspended in the gases. Layers of different fabric insulation can be combined to accommodate the temperatures and pressure in the system.

Rubber Expansion Joints are a flexible connector fabricated from natural or synthetic elastomers and fabrics with metallic reinforcements designed to provide stress relief in piping systems due to thermal changes.

When flexibility for any movement cannot be designed into the piping system itself, an expansion joint is the ideal solution. Rubber expansion joints compensate for lateral, torsional and angular movements preventing damage and undue downtime of plant operations.

Rectangular metal expansion joints have a variety of applications in the power, petrochemical, refining, chemical, and steel industries. Since there are no standard duct sizes, and due to the wide range of pressure and temperature combinations, each rectangular metal expansion joint is custom-engineered to provide the most economical design that will absorb the thermal movements of the system in which it is installed.

Rubber Bellows Expansion Joints/compensator have a special advantage in interrupting or muffling noise transmission in pipeline at pumps or machines in addition to their function as elastic pipe connections. They compensate for movements in pipeline, at pumps, Engines, Turbines, Machines, Equipment and Tanks and can be used to compensate for mounting inaccuracy as extension pieces on fittings or as sealing elements where pipe systems pass through walls.

Expansion joint options have actually been developed for sectors and modern technologies like airline altitude sensors, piping for device coolants, petrochemical processing sector, applications entailing low and high tension vapor, the atomic power sector, clinical innovation, food active ingredient administration, Industrial engines and pump systems.

Expansion joints are used in constructions to cater for shifting nature of weather. Heat can cause certain parts of constructions to expand and reduce, but the joint themselves enables them to do so without damage to the overall structure of a construction to be compromised.

The geometry of the pipe system will usually determine the anchor loads; however, not every piping arrangement will permit the pipe to naturally flex. A confined space or tunnel is an example. In these cases, pipe expansion joints are necessary. Expansion joints may employ bellows, hose and braid, ball joints, flexible couplings or sliding mechanisms. All have their unique properties that are appropriate for a given system.

Metal expansion joints (also called compensator) are compensating elements for thermal expansion and relative movement in pipelines, containers and machines. They consist of one or more metal bellows, connectors at both ends, and tie rods that depend on the application.

It is ideally suited for joints in sidewalks, driveways, streets, and single- and multilevel floor slabs. Due to its unique self-sealing characteristic, no subsequent joint sealing is required.

Expansion joints allow for the floor in which they are placed to move without restraint, and they control where the movement manifests, avoiding random cracking in the floors.

To ensure a long-lasting installation, install movement joints and use the correct type of sealant for filling those joints. The key to a successful tile and stone installation is to follow industry standards.

From the above, it is clear that, expansion joints are the perfect solution for pipe systems to absorb movements, reduce vibrations or noise, resulting in the significantly prolonged service life of the pipe work and connected equipment.

We manufacture a range of bellows, telescopic covers, telescopic spiral spring covers, wipers, apron covers, fabric expansion joints, filter paper and fabrics used in automobile, machine tool and medical industry.
