Bellows and its Types

A Bellows or a Pair of Bellows is a device constructed to furnish a strong blast of air. Bellow is a device for producing a strong current of air, consisting of a chamber that can be expanded to draw in air through a valve and contracted to expel it through a tube. By Wikipedia, bellows is a simplest type consists essentially of a flexible bag comprising a pair of rigid boards with handles joined by flexible leather sides enclosing an approximately airtight cavity which can be expanded and contracted by operating the handles, and fitted with a valve allowing air to fill the cavity when expanded, and with a tube through which the air is forced out in a stream when the cavity is compressed. It has many applications, in particular blowing on a fire to supply it with air.

In Industries bellows are mainly used to protect machines from debris, chips and swarf. Main advantages of using elevating platform bellows are quick to set up, easy to use, simple and transparent charges, wide investment choice, strong service and support. It can be remove anytime during maintenance and cleaning purposes. It does not affect the originality of any machines. The mounting and installation of these elevating platform bellows is very easy. As standard equipment most of the manufacturers offer a Velcro tape on each side. These bellows are widely used in the areas of automobile, medical, machine tools industry, etc.
Bellows which are in various shapes and sizes are long lasting and are available to suit every application. It reduces the accident risk and increase the precision of your machines and their life.

Types of Bellows
Some commonly used bellows are discussed below:

Elastic Bellows
Elastic Bellows are used widely in the areas of automotive, machine tools, etc. It is commonly used to protect machines and devices from unwanted dusts and chips. When necessary we can remove this bellows for maintaining and cleaning purposes. Bellows can be easily attached with the machine using Velcro tapes or metal frames. Many manufacturers make bellows with designs. Bellows are available in market with various colors such as yellow or white materials for medical applications and black, but standard color is Black.

Elevating Platform Bellows
Elevating Platform Bellows has become very popular now-a-days and is widely used in different places. As for the safety requirements, most of the industries recommend a bellow protection for most types of elevating platforms. Elevating platforms bellows can be produced with up to 30 square meters. It may be deployed horizontally or vertically based on the requirements. Using of bellows is quick to setup, easy to use, low investment and strong support. When elevating platform bellows are distorted, a return to the original shape is guaranteed. It does not affect the originality of any machines.
Laminated Bellows
Laminated Bellows are characterized by several layers of foil bonded together. These bellows are used where flexible designs and inherent rigidity are important. Laminated Bellows are now-a-days deployed in spindle-type lifting gear for cameras, measuring and musical instruments as well as for medicine and food technologies. They are used to protect columns, spindles and shafts. Laminated Bellows are not suited to applications with high temperatures and humidity.

Rubber Bellows
Rubber Bellows act as extension joints of rotating gears like pump, pipe works and chillers. They are highly flexible and hence fit easily to complete some misaligned installation allowing lateral, axial and angular movement, which is very similar to metal extension joints. The Rubber Bellows are manufactured from Rubber, Rubberized Canvas, Rubberized Synthetic Fibres and many stiffeners to strengthen it to resist pressure. Capable of being used in alkaline and acidic settings, Rubber Bellows can endure up to a temperature of 250 degree C. This Bellows are extensively used in Fluid Filling System, Chemical Plants, Hydraulic Ram Protections and adjustments in the Duct line.

High Temperature Bellows
High Temperature Fabric Bellows/Glass/Ceramic Fabric Bellows are used where there is continues high temperature application i.e. near furnaces. This materials with Stand temp up to 1200 °C to 2000°C and totally fireproof Standard materials are polyester woven with polyurethane coating. A wide range of different fabrics are available for special applications, for example - Preotex. Kevlar/Aramid fabric for high temperature applications up to 600 ยบ C e.g. laser, plasma or welding machines and Teflon coated for grinding applications.

Fabric Expansion Bellows
Fabric expansion joints bellows are manufactured out of several different materials. Some of them that are used in systems where gas seals need to be provided include Fluoroa Elastomer and Fluro plastic. Fabric expansion joints are also constructed out of rubberized materials, in some cases. Fabric expansion joints are the workhorse of many industrial plants, connecting exhaust system components to their adjacent ductwork. They are most commonly found connecting transport piping and exhaust ducts.

Elevating Platform Bellows

The above discussed types of bellows are commonly used in almost all the industries. Some other types of bellows are discussed in the coming blogs. I hope this blog may be interesting and share your feedback.
